About the Edition Ed Ruscha's sheet comes from a 6-part series of high-quality offset prints, the "Country Cityscapes". For this, the artist photographed idyllic landscape panoramas as a template, as we know them from glossy calendars, and worked them in his direct way into an ironic commentary on our habit of seeing nature as a peaceful counter-world to civilisation. By 'blocking' our free view with dominant black fields, as if he wanted to literally overwrite what he saw, but not here, but very delicately supplementing the text below the picture, he joyfully torpedoed our longing for idyll and created new, subterranean spaces of association. Ruscha, who provocatively presents himself as a traditionalist in his interviews – “I don’t do social media of any kind. If I did, I may as well join Scientology" - pays great attention to the materiality of his prints during the production process: the surface structures and soft textures of the images always allow the original hand photo engraving to be present. The results are editions of a very special kind. About the Artist Ed Ruscha is a pioneer of American conceptual art who influenced artists like Bruce Nauman all the way to Lawrence Wiener. Born in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska, Ruscha began his career as a graphic artist. Today, he is celebrated for his paintings, print designs, photography, films and artist’s books. In 1963, Ruscha released “Twentysix Gasoline Stations”, the first of 16 artist’s books. Adhering to a strict documentary style, Ruscha photographed American landscapes in black and white. The motif of the petrol station along Route 66 from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City is a continuous thread throughout Ruscha’s photobook, combining pop art with conceptual art. His early paintings are also attributed to the pop art movement. Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles; since 1993, he has been represented by the renowned Gagosian Gallery in New York.
