About the Charity-Print

The bumper is loose, the paint is damaged, the rear is dented—the luxury car in George Byrne’s pigment print "Cadillac Venice Blvd. 2025" tells a story of once-glamorous times. Few artists capture Los Angeles as masterfully as Byrne, portraying its colorful facades, sharp-edged shadows, and towering palm trees in a way that is both minimalistic and striking, presenting the city as an "urban landscape." In 2020, George Byrne was among the winners of the Minimalist Photographer of the Year award. In 2022, his first monograph Post Truth was published by Hatje Cantz.

About the artist

The glaring light, the imported palm trees, the pastel colors - the artificiality is inscribed in Los Angeles. Australian-born George Byrne made the southern Californian film metropolis his adopted home as early as 2010 and at the same time the center of his artistic work: on the trail of the New Topographic Movement and photographers such as Robert Adams, Stephen Shore or William Eggleston and painters such as Ed Rusha or Richard Diebenkorn and the Alchemy between shape and color. In his photographs, the urban environment with its colorful facades, road markings and shadows cast in front of the always blue sky coagulates through his masterful image details and a two-dimensional impression of "urban abstraction". Byrne graduated from Sydney College of The Arts in 2001, travelled extensively, and then settled in Los Angeles in 2010 where he has been focusing on his photographic practice.
