About the edition

The silkscreen "Marilyn Monroe in New York" is a nine-color, the hand finish by the artist gives it unique character. The original was created in one day - like all the other works for the exhibition "Dark Days Need Bright Spells". Joachim Lambrechts showed it at the end of 2022 at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in Berlin. "The months I've been working on this show have been one of my most creative and productive periods in my life," the artist says looking back. "It felt like there was no end to the inspiration - it kept flowing out of my body like some kind of raging energy." This energy is evident in the edition: Joachim Lambrecht's Marilyn smiles broadly, her knees drawn together in a coquettishly shameful way - the street scene with the New York-typical Yellow Cabs seems to be based on the famous film clip with the white dress swirling up above the subway shaft in Manhattan. An affectionate homage, the madness around the Marilyn cult included.

about the artist

In Joachim Lambrecht's pictorial worlds, things are colorful and sometimes tumultuous: here, racing cars roar across the picture surface in all colors, there, the fully tattooed, muscular arms of a boxer take up almost the entire picture space. The artist, born in 1986, does it without preparatory sketches-unlike in the case of the huge murals that he realized as commissions throughout Europe before devoting himself exclusively to the canvas. In spontaneity, the Antwerp-based painter finds the necessary freedom for his creativity. His latest work: the edition "Marilyn in New York", which shows a young lady with golden hair holding her 'flying dress'. Of course, Lambrechts has taken on the famous scene with Marilyn Monroe from the 1955 film "The seven year itch", but in the process he has transformed the film icon "MM" into a deeply human, somewhat clumsy figure - an affectionate homage that nevertheless reflects all the lunacy of the Marilyn cult.

Works by Joachim Lambrechts are part of the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection (USA) and the collection of The House of KOKO (London), among many others.
