About the edition

The world as we know it is in danger, and with it the animals: a topic that Joan Jonas also dealt with in her show in the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015 - the motif "Blue Bee" was a Part of it. "I want to show how beautiful these creatures are," says the artist, "and what we're losing." Beauty and fragility, both are also evident in this edition, which is based on a drawing by Jonas. About the artist

The American artist Joan Jonas is a pioneer of video and performance art. In the late '60s and early '70s she fundamentally contributed to the vocabulary of these art forms. Narration is at the center of her installations – a mix of projections, videos, drawings, sounds and objects. Jonas finds inspiration in literature and theatre. The traditional Japanese Noh theater in particular plays a role in her work. In addition, Jonas takes up rituals that she got to know during her numerous international travels. The artist was born Joan Amerman Edwards in 1936 in New York City, where she still lives and works today - in addition to her second location in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her work is widely recognized around the world. She has taken part in six Documenta exhibitions in Kassel since 1972 and has been a guest at the Venice Biennale twice. In 2018, the Tate Modern in London showed one of her largest solo exhibitions to date, which is currently being continued in the Haus der Kunst in Munich.

Latest Exhibitions (Selection)

In spring 2024, Joan Jonas will be honored for her life's work with a comprehensive retrospective at MoMA in New York. The solo exhibition "Joan Jonas", created in cooperation with London's Tate Modern, can currently be seen in the Haus der Kunst in Munich (until February 26, 2023). “They Come to Us Without a Word” was Jonas' acclaimed entry at the 2015 Venice Biennale, with which she performed in the US Pavilion.
