About the Edition

What came first, the image or the word? The artist Pat Steir and the Chinese-American poet John Yau blur the traces of their close collaboration in the suite of lithographs - one merges into the other. In the orange-primed work entitled "Rain Pillow," Steir applies golden pigment. It splashes like the eponymous rain when it touches the ground. In her iconic "Waterfalls," the artistic act of spilling and dripping paint simulates falling water, which simultaneously creates the image of a waterfall. In "Rain Pillow," the rain reappears in Yau's poem as tears gathering in eyes. The arrangement and content of the words reflect the rectangular shape of the cloud and rain. And “Sky’s Four Sides” also explores the relationships between the painterly gesture and the printed word. Steir and Yau show us the natural conditionality and metaphorical power of sky and horizon in a dense atmosphere.
