About the Artwork With captivating color combinations, the Japanese artist Taichi Nakamura creates visual worlds that tell stories of people and their relationship to the environment. Each of these scenes holds a secret: for instance, the watercolors "The day I met you", "Walking down a colorful path", or "Daily life is always unknown". Beneath the soft, delicate layers of his paintings, a subtle tension sometimes stirs. "You are lonely as always", for example, shows three figures, lost in a vast, scrapyard-like landscape. In "Daily life unknown", a comet streaks across the sky—hopefully at a safe distance from Earth. Nakamura masterfully stages his figures at the boundary between pop culture and outsiderdom, closeness and distance, nature and destruction, thereby addressing the major themes of his generation. His poetic titles open up spaces for thought and invite the viewer to dream. About the Artist Though still an insider tip here, Taichi Nakamura, born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1982, has long enjoyed a devoted following in his home country. As a child, Nakamura first drew attention when he began sketching in his parents' kimono shop, captivating customers with his early artwork. It seemed only natural, then, that he went on to earn a painting degree from Tokyo Zokei University’s College of Art and Design in 2008. Since then, Taichi Nakamura has had an impressive exhibition career in galleries and museums in Japan, including exhibitions at Tokyo Opera Art City Gallery (Tokyo) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum. Now he is on the verge of conquering the rest of the world: his work was recently shown in Miami, Rome, Taipei and Berlin. Latest Exhibitions (Selection) Current show “Lost in Paintings”, Taichi Nakamura & Yuichi Higashionna, CAVE-AYUMI GALLERY, Tokyo, from September 27 to November 4, 2024.
