About the Edition Bernd Rathjen is fascinated by futuristic architecture. This is not only evidenced by his highly acclaimed series about Tegel Airport in Berlin, which was built in the 1970s. According to the curator and gallery owner Nadine Barth, the photographer presented the highly esteemed building as "bold and cute, angular and clear", thus erecting a monument rich in detail. Also in Rathjen's favorite decade was the start of construction of "Le Palais Bulles", a residential labyrinth by the Hungarian-French architect Antti Lovag with cupolas, portholes and elliptical windows. Like Lovag's design icon, the luxury residence "La Palmeraie" is also located on the Côte d'Azur, with both complexes opening onto the sea. Comparable to them, the "Palácio da Alvorada", the presidential palace in Brazil's capital Brasília, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, should stand for the future. Rathjen photographs these spectacular places from the past in black and white, which once again underscores their design language. And in each of these photographs he focuses on two characteristic components: palm trees and pools. "Photographs while traveling" is on his Instagram profile. Anyone who looks at Rathjen's pictures also sharpens their own perspective. About the artist Bernd Rathjen (born 1966) started taking photographs at the age of 16. He worked in the music, TV and event industry for 30 years until he increasingly turned to photography. In addition to the architecture, there were also series about cars and art as well as impressive portraits. Rathjen lives in Berlin and on La Palma.
