About the artwork “If you could do that well with Marlene, can you imagine what you can do with me?” It was the young, already famous actress Marilyn Monroe who, in the early 1950s at a party at the “21 Club” in New York, approached the young documentary photographer Eve Arnold—who was then still at the beginning of her career. Monroe had seen Arnold’s photographs of Marlene Dietrich, which were strikingly different from the typical celebrity portraits of the time. Prints such as “Marilyn Monroe at the Casino, Reno, 1960” or “Marilyn Monroe at a press conference for ‘The Prince and the Showgirl,’ New York City, 1956” demonstrate Arnold’s remarkable talent for capturing people—even in seemingly casual, offhand moments. Monroe, for her part, knew how to harness the camera like few others. “We were both gamblers, risk-takers, and we took chances. We both trusted ourselves and each other to carry us through,” Eve Arnold later remarked. Their collaboration yielded iconic images and portraits—including those taken in 1960 during the production of John Huston’s film *The Misfits* in Nevada and California—with this color photograph now being released as an edition in print size for the first time. About the artist Eve Arnold (1912–2012) is considered one of the most significant photojournalists; she was an early member of the legendary photo agency Magnum and the first woman to join its ranks. In 2024, she was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. She shared a friendship with Marilyn Monroe, and over the course of more than a decade, the two women collaborated on a whole series of photoshoots. Through her photography, Eve Arnold manages to bring us a little closer to the human being behind the star—a figure who otherwise seemed entirely consumed by the public eye.
