About the edition

In his Post Truth series, artist Byrne actually blurs the line between the real and the imagined. Are the balloons in the Santa Clarita edition, named after the third largest city in Los Angeles County, real? Or do they complement the street scene too well to be true? And how does the desert view go with the green wall and asphalt? What is real and what is not, he deliberately leaves open, says George Byrne. Sometimes he collages different photographs, sometimes he breaks up the pictorial structure and reassembles it. His pictures are meditations, landscapes and riddles at the same time, he himself says. These works of art “feel right” – and only those who take a closer look will discover the post-factual nature behind their enticing, yearning coherence.

About the artist

The glaring light, the imported palm trees, the pastel colors - the artificiality is inscribed in Los Angeles. Australian-born George Byrne made the southern Californian film metropolis his adopted home as early as 2010 and at the same time the center of his artistic work: on the trail of the New Topographic Movement and photographers such as Robert Adams, Stephen Shore or William Eggleston and painters such as Ed Rusha or Richard Diebenkorn and the Alchemy between shape and color. In his photographs, the urban environment with its colorful facades, road markings and shadows cast in front of the always blue sky coagulates through his masterful image details and a two-dimensional impression of "urban abstraction". Byrne graduated from Sydney College of The Arts in 2001, travelled extensively, and then settled in Los Angeles in 2010 where he has been focusing on his photographic practice.
