About the edition

Voyage in the Dark", "Love and other Wounds", "Stars to Speak" - the very titles of Jordan Sullivan's unique coloured pencil works testify to the artist's narrative talent. The picture stories are deeply rooted in his homeland, the USA, which here necessarily includes stars and stripes, diner and Harley Davidson. Behind "California's Young Pill Poppers" Sullivan lets the arrested Charles Manson appear. And is that Dennis Hopper from "Easy Rider" whom the artist quotes next to boxing world champion Jack Dempsey with the sentence "I will never apologise"? The skyscraper by the sea, the Hotel Traymore, also actually existed in Atlantic City. But Jordan Sullivan's works are much more than a puzzle of set pieces of US cultural history. The lost, the addicted, the dodgy are the focus here. Sullivan meets them with empathy. "There's a violence in almost everyone / and a beauty in absolutely everything," reads one of his poems. The American dream can no longer be had without its flip side. Escapism is out of the question for Jordan Sullivan. Looking at the present, one can only conclude: quite rightly. Nevertheless, he has a vision of the future ready. For "When man has fled and is no longer there... the stars start to speak". A bittersweet glimmer of hope.
