„I think it’s sort of a buoyancy that I liked in the Superman figure, too. He was flying, and I liked him best that way“, sagte sie in einem Interview im „Bomb Magazine“ und verwies auf eine Art Freiheitsgefühl: „Maybe the floating figure is that person who has let go, who’s not trying too hard.“ Bradford fand aus der anfangs abstrakten, gestischen Malerei zu ihren gesichtslosen Figuren.

About the edition

A leap is always daring. Sometimes more, sometimes less. The swimmers in Katherine Bradford's silkscreen series seem awkward and yet deeply human as they plunge into the water. Perhaps that is why they seem so close to us. The painter titled her series "Diver for Beuys" because it was created in dialogue with Beuys' "Elk in the Current" - a silkscreen that is also available at artflash on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Beuys' birth. Bradford worked on all 20 sheets of her sequence by hand. We can see how the depth of the water, the hue of the sky, even the color of the bathing suit or the height of the jetty affect the mood of the picture and hence our emotions. Bradfords densely composed, brightly colored, and atmospheric paintings are part of numerous museum collections, including MoMA and the Portland Museum of Art.

Sie unterrichtete u. a. an der Yale School of Art in New Haven und an der Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Sie lebt und arbeitet derzeit in Brooklyn, New York.

About the artist

Making art is something Katherine Bradford, born in 1942, has fought for. For to devote herself uncompromisingly to painting meant parting with her life as a wife supporting her husband's career. Her works, however, tell less of the resistance she had to overcome on her artistic path than of affectionate companionship and care and the mysteries of life. Her densely composed, brightly colored, and atmospheric paintings have been featured in exhibitions at MoMA PS1 and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, as well as the Modern Museum of Fort Worth in Texas, among others. They are also part of numerous museum collections, including MoMA and the Portland Museum of Art. Bradford has received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation as well as the Pollock Krasser Foundation and the Guggenheim Award.

Mit „Fear of Waves“ präsentierte sich Bradford 2016 das erste Mal bei Canada in New York. Einige Jahre zuvor, 2007, hatte sie an der Gruppenausstellung „Orpheus Selection: In Search of Darkness“ im MoMA PS1, ebenfalls in New York, teilgenommen.
