Über die Edition

„His beach work focusses on the mundane with an honest eye“, befand „The New Yorker“ über den britischen Dokumentarfotografen. Nach Martin Parrs eigenen Worten gibt es keinen faszinierenderen Ort, um Menschen zu beobachten – hier entspannen sie, verlieren ihre Hemmungen, schälen sich die wahren Persönlichkeiten heraus. Doch der Fotokünstler zeigt uns nicht nur Posen von Strandbesuchern im Porträt. Auf seinen Bildern lässt sich auch kollektives Verhalten studieren, das je nach Menschenmenge, Wetterlage oder Land variiert. So entstehen Wimmelbilder wie in Argentinien, ein Flickenteppich aus Handtüchern wie in Italien oder ein Badeevent mit Zuschauern in Wales – zu sehen auf den signierten und limitierten fünf Prints der Edition „Beach Therapy“. „Tenby is the best“, befand Parr. Hier kaufte er sich eine Wohnung in Strandnähe. „It’s like a postcard. But, unless you’re in Wales, you don’t know about Tenby. All the British middle classes go to Padstow. But Tenby’s a secret, so keep it quiet.“ Darum funktionieren Parrs Fotografien so gut: Mögen sie auch noch so entlarvend sein, er liebt, was er dokumentiert. Vielleicht fahren wir demnächst einmal nach Tenby, aber verraten wird natürlich nichts, versprochen!

Über den Künstler

Für Martin Parr gibt es drei elementare Dinge im Leben: Lachen, Glück und Talent. Davon hat der 1952 in Epsom geborene Brite mehr als genug. Mit wenig Melancholie, aber dafür mit umso mehr Humor ausgestattet, fotografiert Parr seit Anfang der 70er Jahre erfolgreich. Von 2004 bis 2012 war er Professor für Fotografie an der University of Wales Newport, zwischen 2013 und 2017 Präsident von Magnum Photos. Im letzten Jahr hat zudem die Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol eröffnet.
