About the edition "Where All Harmonies Are Tuned," the title of Marcel Dzama's 2011 numbered and signed edition, could be emblematic of a leitmotif in the Canadian's ambiguous works: the horror that reveals itself behind superficial fun and playfulness. The circus performers here are condemned to participate: puppets hanging on strings, animated by cloaked beings - the eye masks and dotted costumes are recurring motifs in Dzama's works. The imaginary sound: somber. The figures dance in front of pale staves on a black background. Whether vaudeville, Bauhaus, or manga - the borrowings in Dzama's work are numerous, and yet an original, idiosyncratic artistic signature with a high recognition value emerges. About the artist Marcel Dzama, born in Winnipeg in 1974, is known for his detailed, delicate drawings. Muted colors, obscure figures, erotic motifs and psychosexual themes make his work distinctive. The Canadian artist also works with sculpture, painting, and video; he also continually seeks out opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists such as Raymond Pettibon, Kim Gordon, Spike Jonze, and Dave Eggers. Marcel Dzama is represented in New York and London by renowned gallerist David Zwirner. His works are part of numerous international collections, including MoMA and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
