About the Edition Robert Rauschenberg (1925‒2008) worked throughout his life with a wide range of themes, materials and techniques and is considered a pioneer of virtually all post-war art movements since Abstract Expressionism. For example, along with Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, he was celebrated as the father of pop art. However, he himself always remained independent of any particular group or attribution. When he began making art in the early 1950s, his belief that “painting has to do with both art and life” posed a challenge to the prevailing abstract aesthetic. The juxtaposition of media and heterogeneous materials became a feature of his work that also includes the areas of performance, theater, dance and stage design. Today Rauschenberg's works can be found in all important collections worldwide, and his iconic image inventions are part of our collective visual memory. About the artist As early as the 1950s, Robert Rauschenberg was misunderstood as a provocateur who declared what was thrown away to be art. For him, it has always been primarily about a precise, new look - also with the help of photography. When he traveled to China in 1982, he took hundreds of photographs to get closer to the country's everyday life, its traditions, aesthetics, politics and religion. Rauschenberg photographed shop windows, street scenes, murals, monuments and markets. He combined the “Studies for Chinese Summerhall” into his first and only project with chromogenic prints, a series of 28 photographs that he published as C-print color photographs. We are tremendously happy to present to you today three different motifs from this series, left unnoticed in the drawers of the publishing house for over 40 years.
