In 2018, U.S. photographer, curator and filmmaker Tara Wray published a book entitled "Too Tired for Sunshine," wherein she photographically confronted her depression. The book is a collection of snapshots, still lifes, and small details, whose seeming banality is undermined by a heartfelt sadness. Yet, Wray’s proactive and artistic engagement also gives hope.Today, we exclusively present one of her works: In this photograph, which shows a donut crushed by a glass bell jar, Tara Wray masterfully succeeds in giving metaphorical, even playful expression to the tragedy of life with mental illness. Wray struck a nerve with her book, which has long since sold out. She received countless letters and subsequently moved her project to Instagram. Under the hashtag #tootiredproject, she turned it into a platform, opening it up to other artists. Her newest book, "Year of the Beast", a chronological diary featuring dogs, twins, and domestic scenes from rural Vermont, under a looming specter of doom, is now available through her website.
